Fibromyalgia Q&A

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that causes a variety of uncomfortable and disruptive symptoms. Fibromyalgia causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, although the pain can vary. You may have chronic pain in one location, or the pain may come and go, affecting the same or different parts of your body.

In addition to chronic, widespread pain, fibromyalgia also causes fatigue and cognitive difficulties. For example, you may have trouble paying attention and decision-making.

If you have fibromyalgia, you have an increased risk of other chronic conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, cystitis, migraines, and temporomandibular joint disorder. It’s not uncommon for people with fibromyalgia to also suffer from depression.

What causes fibromyalgia?

Doctors and medical researchers don’t fully understand what causes fibromyalgia. However, evidence points to dysfunction in your neurological system that sends errant pain signals to your brain. Doctors also believe there is a genetic factor in your risk of fibromyalgia. They do know that infections, as well as physical and emotional trauma, can trigger your symptoms.
